GenSaver Cards

Price range: $167.55 through $926.02

GenSaver DNA cards and GenSaver forensic DNA cards are designed for collection, transport and storage of DNA from biospecimen at ambient temperature. These cards are made of pure absorbent fibers according to highest standards in manufacturing and are impregnated with a patented chemical formula that stabilizes nucleic acids at ambient temperature for 20 years.

GenSaver™ 2.0 and GenSaver™ Color 2.0 cards offer additional features in order to allow direct DNA amplification from a paper punch and prevent the growth of microorganisms during the ambient storage. GenSaver™ and GenSaver™ 2.0 are specially designed for forensic and biobanking applications and are available in a variety of standard formats with 1, 2, or 4 sample collection areas per card. White paper is for blood collection and pink paper for buccal cells, saliva
and urine samples. These cards are also available in customized designs according to the needs of the customers.

The paper collection card is the basic tool for ambient storage of raw DBS samples. The GenSaver card is made of:

  • Pure cotton based absorbent fibers
  • Impregnation with stabilizing chemistry, GenTegra-DNA Active Chemical Protection,to protect and stabilize the DNA in the sample.

Thanks to the combination of fibers and chemistry, samples can be collected in remote locals and transport to the laboratory without the need for a cold chain. The GenSaver cards enable direct amplification for STR analysis even after the DBS has been stored for 20-years or more.

The most common raw sample stored on collection cards is Blood and the DNA it contains. The GenSaver collection card is a new and superior replacement for the FTA Classic card. For the storage of proteins, the recommended collection card is a plain papercard which provides better protection for the proteins and eliminates any chemical interference with the Mass Spec analysis that is used for protein analysis. All GenSaver cards are manufactured by Ahlstrom-Munksjö under the ISO 18385 guidelines which ensure the cards are not contaminated with human DNA. The GenSaver 2.0 card is aversion specifically designed for use in the forensic market and provides an antimicrobial component to stabilize the dirty samples often collected in forensic application.

GenSaver cards are available in 1, 2, and 4 spot formats. Color changing formats are available for collection of clear samples such as saliva.

Are gensaver 2.0 cards 903 specimen collection paper? Deb Wellmann asked on July 3, 2025

No. The GenSaver paper is not the same as the 903 specimen collection paper. Briefly, the 903 paper is a Whatman paper and it is the paper used for the manufacture of FTA Classic cards. The 903 paper can be ordered as a plain paper card or as the FTA Classic card which has the FTA chemistry on it. It is the 903 paper that causes the FTA Classic card, and of course the plain 903 cards, to irreversibly bind up to 50% of the DNA in blood, when used to collect blood, e.g. for newborn screening.

The GenSaver 2.0 cards use an Ahlstrom paper called FTN and it does not bind DNA irreversibly as the 903 paper does. It is the reason why when used for blood collection, the GenSaver 2.0 cards yield >95% of the DNA in the original blood sample. The GenSaver 2.0 cards are far superior to the FTA (903 paper) Classic cards for blood sample collection, when DNA yield is concerned.
